Maruti Wagon R Is India's Highest Selling Car In 2024-25 — We Review It

The Wagon R has been around for a while in its current generation but when Maruti first launched this, it was a big update being reengineered for our market while being bigger and more spacious

1,98,451 units. That's how many Wagon R's were sold in India across FY 24-25, making it India’s highest-selling car while being the No1 selling car for FY 22, 23, 24 and 25. It seems the Wagon R in its current generation form is a big success and continues to be so despite the SUV onslaught happening elsewhere. According to Maruti, one in every 4 customers also chooses to again purchase a Wagon R. So why the craze?

The Wagon R has been around for a while in its current generation but when Maruti first launched this, it was a big update being reengineered for our market while being bigger and more spacious. It isn't the best looking Maruti as like a Swift but compared to the earlier versions, the current Wagon R looks better and bigger.

Crucially, the Wagon R is about space with the new platform, adding in spacious interiors and the rear seat space is actually better than some sub compact SUVs! Three passengers can sit comfortably and even the boot is big. The other big change in the current Wagon R came with a more powerful engine with a 1.2l and the AMT automatic option. These two factors have also contributed to its sales.

However, while coming with more features, the Wagon R does not have 6 airbags as standard which we think Maruti also should add like it has done with other cars. The reasons why the Wagon R has been so successful is the space, practicality, good ground clearance and ease of use while with the current generation, ride/handling/safety also increased with the adoption of the latest platform.

Overall, the Wagon R which starts from Rs 5.6 lakh and goes upto Rs 8.6 lakh represents fuss free and practical motoring while not being the most exciting but doing the role of a family car, hence which explains the huge sales it does year on year.
