Bharat Series Number Plate: Govt Raises Awareness On Interstate BH-Series — All About 'One Nation One Registration'

A vehicle bearing BH series shall not require the assignment of a new registration mark when the owner of the vehicle shifts from one state to another

New Delhi: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) introduced the Bharat series number plates on 28 August last year. The ministry started vehicle registration in September 2021 under the newly launched BH-series number plates for non-transport vehicles.

A vehicle bearing this registration mark shall not require the assignment of a new registration mark when the owner of the vehicle shifts from one state to another, according to the ministry.

In a bid to promote the Bharat series number plates, MORTH has tweeted a video saying sharing the benefits of the series.

What prompted Bharat series number plates?

Earlier, when a passenger vehicle moves to another state, they have to re-register the vehicle within 12 months due to Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The process includes a no-objection certificate from the parent state for the assignment of a new registration mark, the assignment of a new registration mark after the road tax on a pro-rata basis is paid in the new State, and Application for refund of the road tax in the parent State on pro-rata basis.

It was mainly introduced to eliminate the tedious process for defence personnel and govt employees who are required to move from one state to another every two-three years.

How much will be the road tax?

The government has stated that for a BH registration vehicle, the road tax will be charged at 8 per cent if the cost of the vehicle is below Rs 10 lakh. It is 10 per cent for those costing between Rs 10-20 lakh. And for vehicles costing more than Rs 20 lakh, the tax is 12 per cent.

How to get a BH series number plate?
