Nepal Unrest: Curfew Imposed, Army Deployed Across Madhesh Province

Nepal is witnessing fresh unrest as communal tensions in the Madhesh Province have escalated into widespread violence, forcing authorities to impose curfews and deploy the army in several areas. The clashes reportedly began in Sunsari district during a Kanwar Yatra over disputes related to loud music, DJ use, and religious flags. What started as a local disagreement between two groups quickly turned violent, leading to stone-pelting, arson, and clashes with security forces. The violence later spread to nearby districts, including Siraha, Dhanusha, and Birgunj. In Siraha’s Gol Bazaar, protesters clashed with police, leaving several people injured and requiring hospital treatment. In Birgunj, near the India-Nepal border, authorities extended an indefinite curfew and issued strict orders to control the situation. The unrest has created tension across several parts of Nepal, with vehicles and shops reportedly targeted during the violence. Prime Minister Balendra Shah held a high-level meeting and appealed to citizens to maintain peace. Security forces, including the army, are now working to restore normalcy and prevent further escalation in affected regions.
