Massive Sinkhole in Seoul Swallows Motorcyclist, Tosses Van Into Air; Biker Found Dead After 18-Hour Search

A massive sinkhole in Seoul swallowed a motorcyclist, causing his tragic death, and tossed a van into the air. Officials recovered the biker's body after an 18-hour search.

A motorcyclist in his 30s tragically lost his life after a massive sinkhole suddenly opened up on a busy road in Seoul on Monday evening. The unexpected collapse swallowed his motorbike and caused a van to be tossed into the air, leaving the driver injured. According to visuals from the scene, the road caved in abruptly, creating a massive hole that left no time for the biker to escape. “NEW: Motorcyclist who vanished into a sinkhole on Monday, found deceased after an 18-hour search.”

Authorities confirmed that the man was riding his motorcycle when the sinkhole, measuring approximately 65 feet wide and 65 feet deep, opened up at an intersection in the Myeongil-dong district of eastern Seoul. The biker, who initially went missing, was later discovered dead after an overnight search conducted by rescue officials. “When the rescue workers found the victim's body, they saw him still wearing his helmet and boots. The search team also recovered his Japan-made vehicle and mobile phone.”

The incident, which quickly went viral after footage was shared by X user Colin Rugg, showed vehicles moving normally along the road before it suddenly collapsed. The biker had no time to react and was swallowed by the massive hole. A van was also caught in the disaster, nearly flipping over before its driver managed to steer forward to safety.

“While the van nearly got upside down and slipped into the hole, the driver somehow managed to rush forward and ensure safety. The rear portion of the vehicle was pulled down when the road caved, however, the four-wheeler was soon tossed into the air.”

Officials are investigating the cause of the sinkhole, which has sparked concerns over road infrastructure and safety in the city. The sudden collapse highlights the urgent need for structural assessments to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The tragic loss of the motorcyclist has sent shockwaves across the country, with citizens and authorities mourning the unfortunate accident. The injured van driver is currently receiving medical treatment, while officials continue to assess the damage and possible risks in the surrounding area.
