Caught On Camera: Fatal Tesla Crash Kills Student In China, Injures Others

Tesla claimed that videos showed the car's brake lights were turned off while it was speeding, and that data revealed issues such as no action to apply the brakes throughout the vehicle's journey.

American multinational automotive company, Tesla said on Sunday that it would assist Chinese police in their investigation of a crash involving one of its Model Y vehicles. Following reports, two people died and three were injured when the driver lost control of the vehicle, news agency Reuters reported.

China is Tesla's second-largest market, and the crash was one of the top trending topics on Weibo on Sunday.

The incident occurred on November 5 in the southern province of Guangdong, killing a motorcyclist and a high school girl, according to Jimu News, which posted a video of a car driving at high speeds and colliding with other vehicles and a cyclist.

"Police are currently seeking a third-party appraisal agency to determine the truth behind this accident, and we will actively provide any necessary assistance," Elon Musk's electric vehicle maker said in a message to news agency Reuters on Sunday, cautioning against believing "rumours."

According to Jimu News, traffic police said the cause of the incident in Chaozhou city had not been determined, and an unnamed family member of the driver said the 55-year-old had brake pedal issues when he was about to pull over in front of his family store.

Tesla claimed that videos showed the car's brake lights were off when it was speeding and that its data revealed issues such as no action to step on the brakes throughout the vehicle's journey, Reuters reported.

Last year, at the Shanghai auto show, an angry customer climbed atop a Tesla to protest the company's handling of her complaints about malfunctioning brakes involved in a car accident.

Videos of her protest went viral on social media, with her shouting "Tesla brake lost control" as visitors and organisers looked on.

In that case, Tesla admitted that speeding violations were to blame for her accident but promised to improve how it handled customer complaints.
