TSMC Mulling To Set Up A New Plant In Germany. Details

TSMC, the world's largest contract manufacturer for chips, is reportedly looking to set up a new plant in Germany.

New Delhi: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest contract manufacturer for chips, is looking to set up a new plant in Germany and is in talks with the German government about setting up a plant in Europe, the media has reported. TSMC is the world’s largest contract chipset maker with production sites mostly in Taiwan.

According to a report by news agency Bloomberg, the chipset maker is considering factors, such as consumer demand, government subsidies before taking a decision of setting up a plant in the country. earlier in June, TSMC Chairperson Mark Liu had told shareholders that TSMC had started assessments on establishing manufacturing operations in the European country, the report added quoting a senior company executive.

Meanwhile, the contract chipset manufacturer is underway to build up new capacity around the world including a $7 billion semiconductor factory in Japan, as well as a $12 billion facility in Arizona set to start mass production in early 2024.

The company has also reportedly begun pilot production of 3-nanometer chips in Southern Taiwan, and expects to be producing them in volume at the end of next year.

Also, recently Qualcomm has reportedly announced that its latest premium 5G chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 SoC is manufactured in Samsung's 4nm foundries and some production issues are forcing it to shift part of the production to TSMC.

Qualcomm, reportedly, is unhappy with Samsung's yields and it is not capable of producing all the needed chipsets so TSMC will participate in the production.
