Snapchat Will Now Track iOS Users' Footsteps, Here's What We Know

Snapchat’s latest feature is similar to Google Maps’ Timeline, which records your trips and the places you've been by using your Location History.

Snapchat has discreetly introduced a new feature for iOS users called 'Footsteps.' This tool enables users to monitor their location history and see how much of the world they’ve explored. Previously available only to Snapchat+ subscribers, Footsteps utilises Snap Map to track users' travel patterns and creates a visual representation of their past adventures. However, there's a limitation: it functions only when Ghost Mode, which conceals the user's location, is deactivated.

When using Snapchat Footsteps for the first time, your initial steps will be generated from your saved memories, meaning your past travels will still be reflected. After that, the app will stop relying on memories to update your Footsteps and will instead track your movements using real-time location data.

This feature shows how many countries you’ve visited and the extent of the areas you’ve explored. For instance, let us take an example of your hometown, this feature might display that you've covered 40 per cent of your hometown, or, if you took a vacation to Paris, it could show that you've explored 5 per cent of the city. Keep in mind, these figures will be more accurate if you're a frequent Snapchat user who regularly saves Snaps, as Footsteps relies heavily on your saved memories for its data.

Snapchat Footsteps: How To Activate

  • Go to Snap Map and click on ‘OK’ on the Footsteps pop-up.
  • Click on Map and toggle off ‘Save new footsteps as my location updates on the map’.
  • If you need to clear the data, then click on 'Clear Footsteps History'

Snapchat’s latest feature is similar to Google Maps’ Timeline, which records your trips and the places you've been by using your Location History. This feature is said to be available for Snapchat users on iOS version 13.9.0.40.
