Qualcomm Inaugurates Chennai Design Centre With Rs 177 Crore Investment: Report

Qualcomm Inc. on On Thursday opened its design centre in the southern Indian state of Chennai. The inauguration was done by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics and IT and Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm Inc. The design centre will specialise in wireless connectivity solutions, emphasising innovations that enhance WiFi technologies. Furthermore, it will play an active role in Qualcomm's worldwide Research and Development efforts in 5G Cellular technology, affirming its dedication to leading the wireless communications sector.

“India's technological prowess continues to soar, positioning us as a global leader in innovation. Our nation's strong commitment to embracing digital progress marks our journey towards a digitally-empowered society. We are happy to extend our support to Qualcomm which has played a key role in accelerating India’s digital journey and together we aim to connect millions of Indians through 5G connectivity,” the minister was quoted as saying by IANS.

The newly established Design Centre is anticipated to create employment opportunities for up to 1,600 skilled technology professionals, bolstering India’s dynamic workforce and fostering growth and development. This investment is poised to pave the way for semiconductor design in line with the government’s "Make in India" initiative, unlocking growth prospects for a robust indigenous design ecosystem, as stated in a press release.

The centre would play an active role in advancing Qualcomm’s global Research and Development efforts in 5G Cellular technology, strengthening its dedication to leading the wireless communications industry.

The Qualcomm boss informed reporters that the centre will play a vital role in the development of the company's wireless products, including WiFi technologies.

Rahul Patel, Group General Manager of Connectivity, Broadband & Networking (CBN) at Qualcomm Technologies, expressed that the new design center "will be instrumental in shaping the future of connectivity worldwide, with a particular focus on India."

India currently boasts a thriving IT industry, with numerous multinational corporations operating within a growth-oriented policy framework, supported by both central and state governments, fostering an environment conducive to the growth of tech talent. Qualcomm is eager to seize the growth opportunities presented by the country.
