Google Rolls Out Updated 'Find My Device' Network For Android Users. Here's 5 New Things That Users Get

Find My Device will collaborate with cross-compatible Android and iOS unknown tracker alert features to prevent misuse of Bluetooth tracker tags by malicious individuals.

The rollout of the new Find My Device network for Android devices started on Monday, extending its availability to all devices running Android 9 or later. Considering that we're currently on Android 14 (with Android 15 on the horizon), this feature caters to a wide range of devices. Similar to Apple's Find My network, the updated Android version offers many familiar functionalities, but it also brings some additional features to the table.

Here's what you can anticipate from the revamped Find My Device for Android.

  1. Find Lost Devices That Are Switched Off: If your Android device goes missing, Find My Device can assist in pinpointing its location on a map and providing proximity alerts as you approach it. Notably, certain Android devices can now be tracked even when offline or with a depleted battery. Google has confirmed that this feature is available on Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones.
  2. Find Nearby: The new proximity feature in Find My Device informs users about their proximity to their missing device. By selecting "Find nearby," users can determine how close they are to locating their device based on the pings it sends out.
  3. Track Items With Tags: Similar to Apple's AirTag tracking functionality, Android devices will soon have the capability to track items attached to Bluetooth tracker tags. Google has announced that tags from various companies such as Chipolo, Pebblebee, eufy, Jio, and Motorola can be tracked using the Find My Device feature starting in May. Furthermore, Find My Device will collaborate with cross-compatible Android and iOS unknown tracker alert features to prevent misuse of these tags by malicious individuals.
  4. Share Location Of Tracked Items With Others: Starting next month, when those Bluetooth trackers are released, users will have the ability to share the location of various items with their family and friends through Find My Device. This feature can be particularly useful if you want your entire family to know the whereabouts of important items like house keys. Additionally, users can easily revoke access later if necessary.
  5. Interaction between Google Nest & Android: Because Android and Nest devices are products of Google, Find My Device integrates both to assist users in locating their desired items. This feature enables Find My Device to indicate the proximity of an Android device to Nest smart home products. For instance, if you misplaced your tracked house keys near your Nest speaker, Find My Device will alert you accordingly.
