Google Messages Might Soon Display Names Of Unknown Senders: Report
To view the name of the person messaging you, they must have profile discovery enabled.
Google Messages is poised to introduce a potentially game-changing feature that displays the name of the person contacting you directly in notifications. This upcoming functionality has been recently uncovered in the beta version of Google Messages. Android Authority, renowned for dissecting apps through APK teardowns to unveil upcoming features, made this discovery. The latest findings suggest that the newest iteration of Google Messages brings about a modification to the notifications you receive on your phone when a new message from an unknown number lands in your inbox.
While this feature is indeed promising, there's a caveat. To view the name of the person messaging you, they must have profile discovery enabled. This requirement hints at a more interconnected experience within Google's messaging ecosystem, potentially offering users a more seamless and personalised communication experience.
How To Enable Profile Discovery (Once It Becomes Available For All)
In order to turn on the profile discovery, you first need to open the Google Messages app. Once you have opened the app then tap on your profile picture which will appear at the top right corner of the screen.
After clicking on the profile picture, head over to the 'Messages settings'. Locate 'Advanced' and click on it, then you need to click on 'Profile Discovery'. Enable the toggle there named 'Profile Sharing'.
Notably, features spotted during an APK teardown sometimes do not make it to the stable version of the app. It is also possible that it may take a while before it is available to everyone. Hence, the information here should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Developers working on Google Messages frequently incorporate and test new features. In a recent instance, Google was in the process of testing a novel pop-up within its Messages application. This pop-up aims to caution users about potential security hazards if they click on a link from a number not saved in their contact list.
