Google Introduces New Energy And Memory Saver Modes For Chrome Users

Google said they are announcing that Chrome will be optimised for the user’s device’s battery and system memory. It added that performance is more than just delivering a fast browsing experience.

Google has announced two new features in Chrome's performance settings, including Energy Saver and Memory Saver modes, in an attempt to make browsing better for users. Chrome will now be optimised for users' battery and system memory.

The latest addition comes as performance is more than just delivering a fast browsing experience for consumers. The company said it will be rolling out both Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes in the next few weeks globally for Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS users.

The new features will be rolled out along with the launch of Chrome 108. The announcement was made just a day after Microsoft said that the company's Edge Browser put 1.38 billion to sleep earlier.

"We’re introducing two new performance settings so Chrome uses up to 40 per cent and 10GB less memory to keep your tabs running smoothly, and extend your battery when it’s running low,” the company said. The move has been made to ensure a smoother-running browser experience for users on the site.

Memory Saver modes will now free up memory from tabs that the user isn't currently using while browsing. This will be done to ensure that "the active websites being browsed by the user have the smoothest possible experience." The changes are expected to be of immense help to users who run different other intensive applications, such as editing videos or playing games.

The company also noted that "any inactive tabs will be reloaded when you need them."

The new features will also ensure that the energy saver maximises battery life. According to Google, "Chrome will save battery by limiting background activity and visual effects for websites with animations and videos." This will be done if the device battery level reaches 20 per cent while the user is browsing the web with Chrome.

"You’re always in control of personalising the performance of Chrome," said the company. It also informed that they will be able to turn off either feature or mark the most important websites as exempt from Memory Saver after all these tools are rolled out for them to use. These controls will be located under the three-dot menu in Chrome.

The new changes have been introduced keeping in mind developers' concerns as well. In a separate blog post, Chrome said, "In general, these new modes were designed with existing developer best practices in mind. If developers have been following long-standing web best practices, their sites should continue to work fine with these new modes."
