Google Unlocks AI-Powered Search For All Users In India, No Labs Required

AI Mode lets users ask complex or multi-part questions, ones that once needed several searches and receive a synthesised AI-powered answer.

Google is expanding the reach of its AI-enhanced search experience, making AI Mode available to all users in India in both the Google Search interface and the mobile app. Previously limited to US users and global participants in Search Labs, this multimodal feature supports text, voice, and image queries. It offers deep reasoning, interactive follow-up, and real-time data.

With India among the first markets worldwide to gain full access, the rollout reflects Google’s strategy to balance innovation in generative AI with quality and trust in the search ecosystem.

What AI Mode Brings to Search

AI Mode lets users ask complex or multi-part questions, ones that once needed several searches and receive a synthesised AI-powered answer. It uses the Gemini 2.5 model alongside Google’s live data sources, including the Knowledge Graph and Shopping Graph, ensuring responses are grounded in real-time information.

Users can type, speak, or use Google Lens to submit queries, and they receive an enriched answer complete with citations and links.

Easy Access, No Sign-Up Needed

Previously, English-language users in India could test AI Mode via the Search Labs programme.

Now, it appears as a permanent tab in search results and within the Google app’s search bar, no sign-up required. Vice President Hema Budaraju calls it the "AI Mode chip," offering both visibility for AI-forward users and control for those who want it.

Smarter, More Trustworthy Answers

Google emphasises the high quality of its AI search rollout. AI Mode builds on AI Overviews, a feature launched in 2024, and includes Google’s established quality systems like spam filters and source verification. In early testers’ hands, it’s already being used for deep learning, detailed “how-to” steps, and multi-stage exploration.

As Google widens access, it aims to preserve trust by clearly citing sources and offering the option to revert to standard search results when the AI lacks confidence.

India now gains full access to Google’s most advanced AI search feature. AI Mode empowers Indian users with enhanced reasoning, conversational follow-up, and multimodal input options across familiar search tools, all without joining experimental programmes.

As Google expands the feature, it seeks to deliver powerful AI search experiences while maintaining user trust and verifiable information.
