Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 May Have A New Hinge That's Being Tested Now

Samsung has started to work on a new hinge for its purported Galaxy Z Fold 5, its next foldable flagship, which is likely to launch later this year.

Samsung has started to work on a new hinge for its purported Galaxy Z Fold 5, its next foldable flagship, which is likely to launch later this year, the media has reported. According to a report by Korean publication The Elec, Samsung is conducting the 'final tests' for the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s new hinge design.

The testing of the upcoming foldable will go on over the next month and Samsung is likely to finalise the design for the new hinge.

Samsung’s new hinge design for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 may be called the 'waterdrop' hinge. The new hinge design that is being tested is likely to make the folded phone slimmer and help reduce the appearance of a crease with the main screen unfolded. The South Korean tech giant is testing the hinge to withstand 200,000 folds like the last one. However, rival Honor and Oppo have better longevity claims with the new Honor Magic VS and Oppo Find N2 and both are rated to withstand 400,000 folds.

The latest handset maker to join the foldable race is Tecno. The company's unveiled its first foldable at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in Barcelona, Spain, for under Rs 1 lakh. Handset maker OnePlus has also announced at MWC that it will launch its foldable device in the second half of this year. Tecno's first foldable is called Tecno Phantom V Fold and it will be available in India in a base model with 12GB of RAM/256GB of storage and another model with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of memory.

To recall, last year's Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 was the first device to ship with Android 12L -- a special version of Android created by Google for large-screen experiences, including foldables. Multitasking on Z Fold 4 was made easier with the new Taskbar that provided a layout similar to a PC, thus, offering access to favourite and recent apps.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 came with an upgraded 50MP wide-lens and 30x Space Zoom lens. It also has a variety of camera modes, including a Zoom map activated on Capture View Mode, Dual Preview, and Rear Cam Selfie. It also has a larger pixel size, a 23 per cent brighter sensor, and enhanced processing power.
