Elon Musk Owned Grok AI Unveils Aurora: A Pro-Quality Image Generator With Minimal Restrictions

Aurora serves as an enhanced version of xAI's earlier image-generation model, which debuted in October.

Elon Musk recently made Grok AI accessible to all users on X, significantly broadening its reach. Shortly after this announcement, xAI, the company behind Grok, unveiled Aurora, its newest image-generation model. Aurora can now be accessed directly through the Grok assistant on X, providing users with advanced creative tools.

However, within hours of its release, some users reported losing access to the Aurora model, though the cause of this issue remains unclear.

What Is Aurora?

Aurora serves as an enhanced version of xAI's earlier image-generation model, which debuted in October. This updated model sets itself apart with fewer restrictions, allowing it to produce images based on nearly any prompt.

This includes generating visuals of well-known figures and characters that may be copyrighted, something many other AI models avoid. To maintain transparency, each image created by Aurora is marked with a watermark in the bottom-right corner.

Elon Musk while responding to an X post, confirmed, “Aurora is still in beta and will improve very fast.”

Even in its beta stage, Aurora has demonstrated its ability to produce highly detailed and realistic images, including controversial content such as violent scenes and representations of copyrighted material—areas where most AI image generators enforce strict restrictions.

Aurora’s accessibility is tiered based on user subscriptions. Free users on X are capped at three image generations per day, while X Premium subscribers benefit from unlimited access to the feature. Additionally, reports from TechCrunch indicate that xAI is in the process of developing a standalone Grok app, which may incorporate the forthcoming Grok 3 model. This development follows xAI’s impressive $6 billion funding milestone, signalling ambitious plans for future innovations.

Netizens Showcase Aurora's Power

A user wrote, "This is wild. xAI just dropped Grok 2 + Aurora, a new AI image model (now taken down). The photorealism is insane. 10 wild examples. 1. No, this isn't Scarlett Johansson photo."

Another user wrote, "With today's launch of xAI’s new image generator called ‘Aurora’, Grok can finally create accurate images of the Cybertruck and @Tesla Semi! Here is a thread of some examples. All 12 images were created by Grok (Aurora)"
