Those Raising ‘Goli Maro’ Slogan At Jadavpur University Will Be Arrested, Says Mamata

Mamata Banerjee said on Monday that those raising ‘Goli Maro’ slogan at Jadavpur University will be arrested.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday that those raising ‘Goli Maro’ slogan at Jadavpur University will be arrested.  "This is not UP, those raising ‘Goli Maro’ slogan at Jadavpur University will be arrested," Banerjee said. Banerjee’s remarks came days after RSS’s students’ wing and the BJP’s youth brigade organised separate rallies demanding a fair investigation into the death of a first-year student at Jadavpur University.

The rallies were marked by slogans like “goli maro…” and “We will skin you” and hurling of footwear and abuses in the direction of the campus, as reported by the Telegraph. According to the Telegraph, the RSS students’ wing (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) were not able to move beyond the starting point at Gol Park in Kolkata as they were stopped by the police. The BJP youth brigade (Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha), had permission from the Calcutta High Court to walk past the university’s campus. It termed JU a den of “drunks and drug addicts”, threatened the students to step out, and hurled footwear at them.

Many students and teachers stood at the gates and saw the procession. A police officer said “thankfully” they did not respond to the provocation, as per the Telegraph.

Mamata Banerjee also said that she will not be surprised if Lok Sabha elections are conducted in December. "Won't be surprised if Lok Sabha polls are conducted in December itself," Banerjee said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

Jadavpur University Fresher Death Case

A first-year Bengali (honours) student died after he fell from a second-floor balcony of Jadavpur University's main hostel in West Bengal's Kolkata. The 18-year-old student named Swapnadip Kundu hailed from Bagula in Nadia district and allegedly faced ragging at the university.

Kundu was rushed to the KPC Medical College, however, he succumbed to his injuries. Governor of Bengal, CV Ananda Bose, who also serves as the university's Chancellor, visited the hostel to console the grief-struck father of the deceased. Bose assured him that decisive action would be taken against those who were responsible for his tragic death, PTI reported.

The incident occurred shortly after the first-year classes commenced. Another student from the same year said that his friend's death was linked to ragging which was allegedly done by a few senior students. According to the findings of the initial investigations, it was revealed that Kundu might have been subjected to bullying by senior students at the hostel. As per PTI, he called his mother while expressing his 'fears'. Soon after that call, his phone got switched off. This prompted the authorities to check his call records and also the phones of his roommates.
