Former Kerala Minister Govindan Nair Passes Away At 96

Prior to retiring from active political life, Nair was a Member of Parliament and the President of the Travancore Devaswom Board.

New Delhi: Former Health Minister of Kerala MP Govindan Nair passed away in Kottayam on Wednesday morning. He was 96-years-old.

According to report by news agency PTI, Nair died of age-related ailments at his residence in Kottayam, the family sources said.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan offered his condolences on the demise of Govindan Nair, who was the Health Minister of the southern state during the Congress rule in the state from the year 1962 to 1964.

Notably, prior to retiring from active political life, Nair was a Member of Parliament and the President of the Travancore Devaswom Board.

Govindan Nair acted as the Kottayam DCC president, member of KPCC, AICC, NSS and chief of a charitable organisation. MP Govindan Nair married Sarada Devi, the daughter of Godavarma Raja of Poonjar palace. He is survived by his daughter Sudha.

His last rites would be held on Thursday, according to the family sources.

Born on April 27, 1926 in Paranpuzha Puthenpura near Kottayam to N Parameswaran Pillai and Kunjukuttayamma, Nair, after completing his schooling, did his Intermediate at CMS College in Kottayam, and BA in Economics with a first-class degree. He then passed BL from Law College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. In November 1950, he became a lawyer in Kottayam Bar. At the very young age of 24, Nair became the president of Vijayapuram Panchayat.
