Rio Olympics: Sandhu, Chenai make quiet exits, fail to qualify for final in trap shooting
Rio de Janeiro: As all focus was on Abhinav Bindra, the trap shooters Manavjit Sandhu and Kynan Chenai made unceremonious exits from the event as they failed to qualify for the final round here on Monday.
After their poor first day showing, Sandhu and Chenai needed to come up with some superlative showing to stay alive in the event but their efforts hardly matched the occasion and they finished 16th and 19th respectively after the second qualifying round.
The top six shooters made the semifinals.
Getting off to a promising start, Sandhu moved into eighth spot before slipping in the following round to finish with 115 points that brought the curtains down on his fourth Olympic campaign. Chenai ended with 114 points.
Sandhu, who had shot 68 (23-23-22 ) on Sunday, shot 47 (25-22) on Monday to finish 16th. Chenai, who had shot 67 (22-23-22) on first day, shot 47 (24-23) on day two to finish 19th.
While the first leg of qualifying on Sunday had 33 shooters firing 75 shots over three series, the second round had them taking 50 shots over two series comprising 25 shots each.
