Double Purple Cap Winners: Two IPL Legends Return, One Sits Out In 2025

Only three bowlers in IPL history have managed to win the Purple Cap twice - a testament to their consistency.

The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin, and while the tournament is often seen as a paradise for batsmen, bowlers have also left their mark over the years.

Winning the Purple Cap, awarded to the highest wicket-taker in a season, is a prestigious achievement. However, only three bowlers in IPL history have managed to win it twice - a testament to their consistency.

For IPL 2025, two of these bowlers will be in action, while one has retired. Let’s take a look at these elite bowlers and their achievements.

1. Dwayne Bravo (2013, 2015)

Dwayne Bravo became the first bowler to win the Purple Cap twice, achieving this feat while playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2013 and 2015. A key figure in CSK's bowling attack, Bravo took 183 wickets in 161 IPL matches between 2008 and 2022. Having retired from the league, he will now serve as the mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2025.

2. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2016, 2017)

Bhuvneshwar Kumar dominated the IPL in 2016 and 2017, winning back-to-back Purple Caps while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Known for his swing and accuracy, Bhuvi played a crucial role in SRH’s bowling unit. Over his IPL career, he has taken 181 wickets in 176 matches, including two five-wicket hauls. In IPL 2025, Bhuvneshwar will be seen playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after his long stint with SRH.

3. Harshal Patel (2021, 2024)

Harshal Patel is the latest bowler to join this elite list, winning the Purple Cap in 2021 with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and again in 2024 while representing Punjab Kings (PBKS). A specialist in slower balls and variations, Harshal has taken 135 wickets in 106 matches. He will now be seen in action for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2025.

Will a third purple cap be won?

With Bravo retired, all eyes will be on Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel to see if either can create history by winning a third Purple Cap in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
