Glenn Maxwell 'Thanks' Virat Kohli In His Book For Blockbuster 'Trio' Idea At RCB After Horror IPL 2020

Glenn Maxwell noted Virat Kohli's role in RCB roping in the Australian all-rounder ahead of IPL 2021.

Glenn Maxwell's Indian Premier League (IPL) career has been a bit of a start and stop. While he had a breathrough season with the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in IPL 2014, he then had a gradual decline in form in the buildup to a horror year where he could not even score a single boundary. However, he was still backed by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the cash-rich tournament, where he has managed to build a good relationship with Virat Kohli.

And now in his new book "The Showman" where he lifts curtains over certain aspects of his career, the Australian hard-hitting all-rounder has said that it was first Kohli who during a casual conversation first hinted at the possibility of RCB bidding for him in the auction. Maxwell was delighted at the possibility of batting alongside Virat and AB de Villiers and over the three seasons, he has done reasonably well, chipping in with the bat, ball and on the field.

'When the paddle came down for me from RCB, I was the happiest cricketer in the world'

In his book, Maxwell noted how he was "happiest cricketer in the world" when RCB successfuly bid for him ahead of IPL 2021.

"But I still felt there had to be a twist in this story, and there was. Who to thank? Virat Kohli. He wanted to whisper an idea to me: him, me, and AB de Villiers to be the middle order at Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021," the 36-year-old writes in his book.

Maxwell then goes on to describe how he was restless for the auction to happen and as it turned out, RCB did ended up bidding for him, including him in the team for Rs 14.25 crore. "This time, though, I was obsessed. When the paddle came down for me from RCB, I was the happiest cricketer in the world," he said.

As it turned out, IPL 2021 turned Maxwell's fortune in the tournament. While he was struggling with poor form before the start of the season, he had a good season in RCB colours where he re-discovered his missing mojo.

"It was in Bangalore where I would begin my second act as a player," Maxwell said.
