‘I Agree’: Elon Musk Backs US Withdrawal From UN & NATO

This follows Senator Mike Lee's introduction of a bill in February, which is aimed at ending US membership in the UN and its affiliated organisations while cutting off funding to those groups.

Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), supported the idea of the United States withdrawing from the United Nations (UN) and NATO.

While retweeting a user’s post, Musk wrote “I agree” on X.

This follows Senator Mike Lee's introduction of the Disengaging Entirely From the United Nations Debacle Act of 2025 in February. The bill is aimed at ending US membership in the UN and its affiliated organisations while cutting off funding to those groups.

Additionally, it seeks to revoke the agreement allowing the UN to maintain its headquarters in New York and strip UN employees of diplomatic immunity within the United States.

While speaking to Fox News Digital, Lee said that the UN had devolved into a “platform for tyrants and a venue to attack America and her allies”. He said the country should stop paying for it. “As President Trump revolutionizes our foreign policy by putting America first, we should withdraw from this sham organization and prioritize real alliances that keep our country safe and prosperous,” he told Fox.

The US is the largest financial contributor to the UN, providing over $18 billion in 2022, according to the Council on Foreign Relations. This accounts for approximately one-third of the UN's total budget, reported Fox.

Trump's Disatifaction With NATO

Similarly, President Donald Trump has repeatedly voiced dissatisfaction with NATO’s operations. Even before his election, he warned that the US might withdraw from the North Atlantic Alliance unless European partners assumed greater financial responsibility for their own security.

Trump had announced, early February, that the United States will withdraw from the top UN human rights body and will not resume funding for the UN agency helping Palestinian refugees.
