BCCI's IPL 2023 Surplus Earning Jumps 116 Per Cent To Over 5000 Crore. Total Income Will Blow Your Mind

It is no surprise that the Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) is one of the richest cricket boards in the world. One of the primary reasons behind the same is the success of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Indian cricket board has earned a surplus of Rs 5120 crore, reports Economic Times.

As per the same report, the BCCI's total income has been seeing a scarcely believable growth- a 78 per cent yearly increase. However, the important thing to note also is that the expenditure has also increased 66 per cent to Rs 6648 crore. The figures were taken out from the BCCI's annual report for the 2022-23 year.

How Much Was IPL 2023's Total Income?

The total income for the IPL 2023 is clocked at a staggering Rs 11,769 crore. What is the reason behind this spike in growth? There was a new media rights and sponsorship deal that fuelled the massive numbers that are on display. For the  2023-27 cycle, the new media rights deal is worth Rs 48,390 crore with the 2023 IPL being the first edition which was part of this deal.

Disney Star had bagged the IPL TV rights deal for Rs 23,575 crore for same five-year period. In additon, the digital rights were bought by JioCinema for Rs 23,758 crore. In addition, there was a title right sale as well which was purchased by the Tata Sons For Rs 2500 crore.

Although the initial plan was to have 84 matches in IPL 2025 which is what was proposed while selling the broadcast rights, in a recent statement BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said that the tournament could possibly go ahead with the same 74-matches format.

"We have not taken a call on organising 84 matches in IPL 2025 since we also have to factor the load on the players due to the increase in matches. While it's (84 matches) part of the contract, it's up to the BCCI to decide whether to organise 74 or 84 matches," Shah told Economic Times.
