Watch: Mid pitch collision almost breaks Philander's ribs
New Delhi: Cricket, referred to as the gentleman’s game has seen its fair share of nasty on-field injuries, most common being a collision. South African fast bowler Vernon Philander survived after one such nasty collision in the ongoing second test between Australia and South Africa at Hobart.
Philander, who ran through the Australian top order collided with Australian skipper Steve Smith on his follow through. Australia was tottering at 16/4, when Philander struck Steve Smith’s pad. The fast bowler immediately went up in a vociferous appeal, Smith on the other hand had no clue of where he was heading as he set off for a run. Even though the Australian captain tried his best to get out of the way, his outstretched arm jammed into Philander’s ribs as the two collided.
Philander fell to the ground grabbing his ribs and was carried out of the field by the team physiotherapist. Fortunately, the injury was not as bad as it looked and Philander was back on to the field to claim his five-for and bowl out Australia for a mere 85, their lowest home total in 32 years.
