Virat Kohli is set to make his Ranji Trophy return for the first time since 2012 following the BCCI's directive that players must participate in domestic cricket to be eligible for national selection. His comeback to the Feroz Shah Kotla, now the Arun Jaitley Stadium, for an otherwise routine Ranji contest against Railways starting on January 30 has become a major talking point. Amidst all the spectacle, Kohli, who practiced in the Kotla nets shared a heartwarming moment with his childhood friend Shawez Khan and his son.
While at the practice nets, Virat Kohli paused when he spotted Shawez Khan, who he played Delhi U-17 and U-19 cricket with, and greeted him with warmth. The two shared a friendly embrace, seemingly reminiscing about their time playing age-group cricket together in Delhi. Shawez's young son, Kabir, was also at the session, where Kohli took photos with both Shawez and Kabir, and even signed an autograph on Kabir's bat.

“Indian cricketer banne ke liye kya karna padega (what one needs to do to become an Indian cricketer)?,” asked Kabir.
Kohli advised Kabir that achieving success requires hard work and self-motivation, urging him to take initiative in practice. He emphasised the importance of practicing longer than others to stand out.
Kohli replied: “A lot of hard work, mehant karni padegi. Aur aapko practice aur training ke liye bolne ki zarurat nahi padni chahiye. Khud se, subeh uthke ‘merko jaana hai practice karne, merko training karne jana hai.’ Aur agar koi ek ghanta practice kare toh aap do ghanta practice karo. Woh ek hi tareeka hai bass. (No one should have to tell you to practice or train. You should yourself say every morning that you want to go to practice. If someone practices for an hour, you do it for two hours. That is the only way)."
Kohli encouraged Kabir to exceed the usual benchmarks, advising him to always aim for double the achievement of others, whether it's scoring 50, 100, or 200.
“Koi agar 50 banata hai toh aap 100 banao. Koi 100 banata hai aap 200 banao. Jo benchmark hai us se double. (If someone scores a 50, you score a 100, and if someone scores a 100, you score a 200. Whatever the benchmark is, you should do double of it),” Kohli added.
