How To Observe The Fast During Chaitra Navratri, What To Eat, What To Avoid – Know The Guidelines
Observing a fast for all nine days of Chaitra Navratri is believed to bring prosperity and happiness. Know how to keep the Navratri fast and which foods to avoid.

Chaitra Navratri 2025: Chaitra Navratri holds immense spiritual significance for fulfilling divine desires, attaining siddhi, and seeking salvation. Dedicated to Goddess Durga, this festival marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year.
There are two major Navratris celebrated in a year — Chaitra Navratri and Sharadiya Navratri (in the month of Ashwin). However, Chaitra Navratri is considered particularly significant as it commences on the first day of the Hindu calendar. Devotees observe fasts from Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana) until Ram Navami, adhering to strict rituals to seek the Goddess’s blessings.

How To Observe Fast During Chaitra Navratri:
Devotees can follow different types of fasting, including Rasopavas (liquid fasting), Phalopavas (fruit fasting), Dugdhopavas (milk fasting), Laghu Upavas (light fasting), Adhopavas (partial fasting), and Purnopavas (complete fasting). Those who take a vow for nine days should continue the fast from the first day until Navami. If breaking the fast is necessary due to unavoidable circumstances, it should be done only after seeking forgiveness from the Goddess.
According to religious beliefs, those unable to fast for all nine days should observe a fast on the last two days—Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami. It is believed that fasting on these days grants the same spiritual benefits as observing the entire nine-day fast.
What To Eat During Navratri Fasting:
Devotees who opt for a single meal during the day can consume fruits, buckwheat flour (kuttu), water chestnut flour (singhara), milk, sago (sabudana), and potatoes. Rock salt (sendha namak) is traditionally used in food preparations during Navratri fasting.
Navratri Fasting Rules:
- Maintain celibacy during the fasting period.
- Avoid wearing black-colored clothes during the nine days.
- Refrain from sleeping during the day while observing the fast.
- Avoid consuming alcohol, tobacco, or non-vegetarian food.
- Do not cut nails, hair, or shave during the fasting period.
- On Ashtami or Navami, perform Kanya Bhojan (offering food to young girls), followed by a sacred havan before breaking the fast.
