Nagpur Violence: 38-Year-Old Man Dies Days After 'Brutal' Attack, Brother Demands Strict Punishment
Irfan Ansari, 38, died in Nagpur hospital after being attacked on March 17 while walking to the railway station. The family is demanding strict punishment for the accused.

Nagpur violence: A 38-year-old man, Irfan Ansari, who was brutally attacked amid the recent communal violence in Nagpur, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Mayo Hospital on Saturday, the hospital administration confirmed. Ansari was assaulted on 17 March while heading towards Nagpur railway station.
His brother, Imran Sani, told news agency ANI, “We tried our best to save him but we couldn’t. Doctors treated him well, but they couldn’t save him. My brother had left for Itarsi Junction Railway Station in an auto. Midway, the driver told him he wouldn’t go further as the situation was tense. My brother then decided to walk. On the way, some unknown people attacked him so brutally that he fainted. He had severe injuries to his head, his leg was fractured, and he suffered back injuries… He said that he was attacked by the public.”

Demanding justice, Imran added, “We demand the strictest punishment for the accused. In the future, no one should meet such an unfortunate fate.”
According to news agency PTI, a hospital official said Ansari passed away at 1.20 pm at the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital (IGGMCH), where he had been admitted with grievous wounds. The welder had left home around 11 pm on Monday to catch a train to Itarsi from Nagpur railway station, one of the areas affected by the violence.
The violence erupted on 17 March following rumours that a chadar with holy inscriptions was burnt during protests led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Large-scale stone pelting and arson were reported in multiple areas of Nagpur.
Total 105 Arrested In Nagpur Violence Case
Meanwhile, the police have arrested 14 more individuals, including 10 juveniles, in connection with the violence, taking the total number of arrests to 105. Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singhal stated that three more FIRs have been registered. “Fourteen accused were arrested from different parts of the city in connection with the riots,” Singhal said, as per PTI.
He added that a decision on lifting the curfew in certain areas would be taken after a high-level review meeting. The commissioner also held a meeting at Police Bhavan in Civil Lines to assess the situation.
At least 33 police personnel, including three Deputy Commissioners of Police, were injured in the violence. Key accused Fahim Khan has been booked for sedition.
