'One Of Modern Day Greats': Tributes Pour In For Amla

Cricket fraternity and fans flooded the social media with tributes for the great batsman after he called time on his international career

South Africa legendary cricketer announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket. Amla will continue to be available for domestic cricket as well as the Mzansi Super League. Ranked among the best batsmen in moder cricket, Amla's  international career was spread over 15 years he played 349 matches across the three formats for the Proteas, making more than 18 000 runs, including 55 centuries and 88 other scores in excess of 50. Cricket fraternity and fans flooded the social media with tributes for the great batsman after he called time on his international career. Former Proteas skipper AB de Villiers took to social media and said: "Unreal career Hashim Amla! So many doubted u early on, but your fighting spirit, humility and incredible one of a kind talent took u to the top of the mountain and ultimately to one of the best players in the world and certainly I've ever seen. Congrats on an amazing career."

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar paid tribute to Amla and tweeted: "The great Hashim Amla has surprised the world with his announcement to retire from all forms of cricket, what a legend and what a great human being and great brand ambassador of the game respect to you wish you best of luck."

Former Australian cricketer Lisa Sthalekar pondered what a South African line-up without two of its all-time greats -- Dale Steyn and Hashim Amla -- would look like. "Wow two modern greats of the game have now retired first Dale Steyn and now Hashim Amla. Thoroughly enjoyed what they were able to do on the field. Amla remains the only South African cricketer to score a triple century in Test cricket. In 124 Tests, Amla scored 9,282 runs at 46.41 with 28 centuries and 41 fifties. His ODI career was equally successful as he was ranked among the best batsmen in the format, holding the South African record of 27 tons. He was also the quickest to 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000, 6,000 and 7,000 ODI runs. In 181 ODIs, Amla collected 8,113 runs at 49.46 with 27 hundreds and 39 half-centuries. He also climbed to the top of the ICC rankings in both Tests and ODIs.
