Two-Time Winners West Indies Fail To Qualify For World Cup For First Time In History

West Indies, winner of 1975 and 1979 ODI World Cup editions, for the first time in the 48 years of tournament history, won't feature among the top 10 teams in white-ball cricket.

Owing to poor cricket across departments, two-time winners West Indies, for the first time in the history of 50-over (ODI) World Cup, failed to qualify for the prestigious tournament after a shock seven-wicket loss to underdogs Scotland in a Super Six match of the ODI World Cup qualifier on Saturday. Clive Lloyd-led West Indies, winner of 1975 and 1979 ODI World Cup editions, for the first time in the 48 years of tournament history, won't feature among the top 10 teams in white-ball cricket. The 2023 edition of ODI World Cup will be played in India from October 5 onwards. Notably, this was also Scotland's first victory over West Indies.

Scotland won the toss and invited West Indies to bat first. Batting first, West Indies were bowled out for 181 runs in 43.5 overs. In reply, Scotland chased down the target and ended up scoring 185 runs after losing 3 wickets in 43.3 overs. For Scotland, Matt Cross (74 not out off 107 balls) and Brendon McMullen (69 off 106 balls) added 125 for the second wicket to seal the victory.

The chances of West Indies to qualify for World Cup qualifiers were always bleak as they were dependent on the outcome of other matches. They entered Super Six round with zero points after losing to Netherlands in Group A's crucial encounter in Super Over eliminator, which followed a loss to Zimbabwe. Both Zimbabwe and the Netherlands qualified for the Super Six from Group A.
