Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to kick off their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign, featuring in IPL 2025 opener on Saturday (March 22), but will be without two of their biggest stars in the opening match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Captain Hardik Pandya confirmed in a press conference on March 19 that star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is still recovering from an injury and has not received clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to play. As a result, he will miss MI's first game against CSK on Saturday. It is also possible that Bumrah's misses not just the match against CSK but new few games as well.

Potential replacements for Jasprit Bumrah in MI's opening matches

With Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of Mumbai Indians' opening match in IPL 2025, here are three possible options:

Mujeeb Ur Rahman: Since MI's opening match is at the spin-friendly MA Chidambaram Stadium, MI might consider playing an extra spinner instead of a pacer. Afghan mystery spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who has taken 19 wickets in the IPL, could be a strategic choice. 

Corbin Bosch: South African pacer Corbin Bosch could be a strong contender. While he hasn't played T20Is for his country, his T20 record is promising, with 59 wickets in 86 matches. Bosch is known for his wicket-taking ability, though he can be expensive. 

Venkat Satyanarayana Raju Penmetsa: The young right-arm pacer impressed in the Andhra Premier League, picking up 7 wickets at an economy of 6.15. Mumbai Indians have a track record of backing emerging talents, as seen with Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. If MI takes a bold call, Venkat's unfamiliarity to CSK batters could work in his favor as a surprise element.
