India's Champions Trophy 2025 Squad Announcement Faces Likely Delay; Shami Set for ODI Comeback | Report

The BCCI is reportedly seeking an extension for the announcement of India's Champions Trophy squad, with Mohammed Shami set for a potential return to the national team.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may not be able to announce the provisional ODI squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 tournament in time as they have reportedly requested an extension of the January 12 deadline from the International Cricket Council (ICC). Initially, India were expected to unveil their 50-over squads for the upcoming white-ball series against England and the Champions Trophy, set to begin on February 19 in Pakistan and the UAE. However, as per a Crickbuzz report, India are seeking an extension from the apex cricket body.

The ICC mandates that teams submit a provisional squad at least one month before any global event, with the flexibility to make changes later. However, for the upcoming Champions Trophy, the ICC has requested squads five weeks prior to the tournament's start.

BCCI To Seek Additional Time For CT 2025 Squad Announcement

As per Cricbuzz, the BCCI, citing its recent commitments in Australia for the Test series, is expected to seek additional time. The provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, likely featuring players from the three home ODIs against England, is now expected to be announced around January 18-19. The tournament begins on February 19 in Pakistan and the UAE.

Shami To Be Back In India Colours?

Another significant development is the likely inclusion of Mohammed Shami in the ODI squad. While his participation in the England T20Is remains uncertain, the veteran pacer is expected to feature in the IND vs ENG ODIs and the Champions Trophy.

Reports suggest that Shami has either received or is on the verge of receiving clearance from the Sports Science wing of the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Having recently represented Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Shami could be set to end his international hiatus, providing a massive relief to India's bowling group, which has been heavily reliant on Jasprit Bumrah, which was evident in the recently-concluded IND vs AUS Tests. Shami last played for India during the 2023 World Cup in October-November.

England is scheduled to play five T20Is followed by three ODIs, starting January 22. The ODI matches are set to take place on February 6, 9 and 12.
