While he missed out in the second innings with just 8 runs, his brilliant 147-run knock in the first innings ensured he surpassed Sunil Gavaskar to achieve a significant milestone.

Most Runs by an Indian in Debut Match as Test Captain

Gill has now become the third Indian cricketer to score the most runs in his debut Test match as captain, accumulating 155 runs across both innings.

Here’s how the top five stand:

Virat Kohli – 256 runs (115 & 141)

Vijay Hazare – 164 runs

Shubman Gill – 155 runs (147 & 8)

Sunil Gavaskar – 151 runs (116 & 35)
