Captain Shubman Gill, who impressed in the first innings, couldn’t replicate his form and was dismissed early on Day 4 for just 8 runs.

The first Test between India and England at Leeds has been memorable for Shubman Gill, not just for his batting but also for the record books.

While he missed out in the second innings with just 8 runs, his brilliant 147-run knock in the first innings ensured he surpassed Sunil Gavaskar to achieve a significant milestone.

Most Runs by an Indian in Debut Match as Test Captain

Gill has now become the third Indian cricketer to score the most runs in his debut Test match as captain, accumulating 155 runs across both innings.

Here’s how the top five stand:

Virat Kohli – 256 runs (115 & 141)

Vijay Hazare – 164 runs

Shubman Gill – 155 runs (147 & 8)

Sunil Gavaskar – 151 runs (116 & 35)

While Shubman Gill couldn’t make a big impact in the second innings, his first-innings century as a debutant captain helped India set the tone in the match and etched his name into an elite list of Indian Test leaders.
