IND vs AUS 3rd Test: Virat Kohli breaks Rahul Dravid's 16-year-old record

Indian skipper Virat Kohli became the highest Indian run-getter in overseas Test in a calendar after surpassing legendary batsman Rahul Dravid

Indian skipper Virat Kohli (82) failed to make a Test century on Day 2 of the third Test in Melbourne but the fantastic knock by him broke legendary Indian batsman Rahul Dravid's 16-year-old record. The 30-year-old became the highest Indian run-getter in overseas Test in a calendar after surpassing Rahul Dravid.

Kohli surpassed Dravid's 1137 – scored in 2002 – as India declared their first innings at a mammoth 443/7 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here on Thursday.

The otther two top scorers apart from Kohli and Dravid are veteran Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 918 runs in 1971 and Mohinder Amarnath, who scored 1,065 runs in 1983.

Interestingly, this is the first time Kohli has not attained the three-figure mark after reaching 50 in the first innings in Tests in Australia.

The fall of Kohli brought in his deputy Rahane, who looked fluent with his trademark shots even as the centurion Pujara (106) went on with his business at the other end.

Earlier, India resumed the second morning at 215/2 with Pujara and Kohli helping the team add 62 runs in a wicketless opening session.

Pujara scored his 17th century in Test cricket on day two of the third Test. Australian openers survived the early jitters to post 8/0 at stumps on Day 2 of the third Test after India declared their first innings at a mammoth 443/7 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
