ICC Test rankings: Indian batsmen shine despite losing 4th test

While Virat Kohli remains on the top of the world, English stars including Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler and Sam Curran have made upwards moves in the chart after defeating India by 60 runs in the Southampton clash

Despite his side’s defeat in the Southampton Test, Virat Kohli’s half-century has helped him maintain his top spot in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Batting rankings. He currently has 937 rating points against his name which is the 11th highest of all time.

Cheteshwar Pujara remains intact at the sixth position on the list of batters. He slammed an unbeaten 132 in the first innings which helped him move to 798 points.

In the Indian bowling department, veteran spinner R Ashwin has slipped below Rangana Herath to No.8. Mohammed Shami rose three spots to No.19 after he picked a 6-wicket haul in the fourth Test – 2/51 and 4/57.

Moeen went up three places in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Player Rankings for bowlers to No.33. he made a terrific comeback in the fourth Test against England. He stuck 40 runs with the bat in the first innings and scalped 9 wickets in the entire match - 5/63 and 4/71.

On the other hand, 20-year-old Sam Curran and English vice-captain Jos Buttler have risen to No.32 and No.43 with a career-best rating of 584 and 545 points respectively.

Curran, who was majorly included as a bowler, has impressed with the bat in the ongoing series. He scored his innings-best 78 the first time and then 46 as England managed to set a big enough target to India.

At the same time, Jos Buttler is the second leading run scorer of this series after Virat Kohli. The English vice-captain has scored 260 runs from 7 innings, averaging 37.14. He is also the second most boundary hitter of this rubber. After Virat, Buttler stands second with 38 fours in his kitty.

It’s been worse for Alastair Cook as he had scored just 109 runs so far in the series with a best of 29 at an average of 15.57 and has slipped four places to No.21.
