England announce playing XI for 3rd Test; Stokes in, Curran out

The axing of Curran has surprised several cricket followers. The young speedster not only bowled well in the last two games but also performed with the bat when it was required

England have announced their playing XI for the 3rd Test against India, beginning on Saturday at Nottingham. Skipper Joe Root has confirmed that all-rounder Ben Stokes will return to the side and will replace 20-year-old Sam Curran from the side that won the second Test at Lord's.

Terming it a ‘tough decision’, Root said, “It was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make as captain. It’s about us as a squad delivering over five games and on this occasion, Sam is unfortunate to miss out.

“Ben is desperate to get back playing cricket. He’s desperate to get out there, put in performances and concentrate on his cricket now. He feels ready to play.”

Here’s England’s playing XI for the Third Test against India:

  1. Alastair Cook
  2. Keaton Jennings
  3. Joe Root (c)
  4. Ollie Pope
  5. Jonny Bairstow (w)
  6. Ben Stokes
  7. Jos Buttler
  8. Chris Woakes
  9. Adil Rashid
  10. Stuart Broad
  11. James Anderson

Stokes, who missed the 2nd encounter at Lord’s, was inducted back in the side on August 14 after he was found not guilty guilty of affray by the Bristol Court. Hours after walking out free from the Bristol court, he found himself in the English squad for the third Test.

The ECB released a statement on Tuesday, confirming the return of Stokes in the 3rd Test.

On the other hand, the axing of Curran has surprised several cricket followers. The young speedster not only bowled well in the last two games but also performed with the bat when it was required.

He plucked 5 scalps in Birmingham, 1 at Lord’s and scored 123 runs in both the games including a half-century in the first match where he bagged the man of the match award as well.
