Why Unmarried Girls Do Not Participate In Sindoor Daan Ritual At Wedding — Know The Reason Here

In Hinduism, the ritual of Sindoor Daan is considered an essential part of marriage and is believed to complete the wedding ceremony. However, unmarried girls are not allowed to witness this ritual.

In Hindu tradition, weddings are accompanied by numerous rituals, each holding significant importance in Sanatan Dharma. Every wedding ceremony is performed with utmost care and devotion to ensure that the married couple’s life is filled with happiness and prosperity.

Marriage is one of the sixteen sacred rituals (16 Sanskars) in Hinduism. The tradition of marriage has been followed for centuries, with various customs observed before, during, and after the ceremony. Prior to the wedding, several rituals take place, such as engagement, tilak, haldi, and mehndi. During the wedding, significant rites like the exchange of garlands, taking seven vows around the sacred fire (pheras), the giving away of the bride (Kanyadaan), and the application of sindoor (vermilion) are performed.

Sindoor Daan – A Vital Ritual

Sindoor Daan is considered one of the most important customs in Hindu weddings, and without it, the marriage is considered incomplete. During the ceremony, the priest chants sacred mantras as the groom applies sindoor to the bride’s hair parting. This signifies the beginning of the couple’s marital journey and symbolises their bond for seven lifetimes.

Who Should Not Witness The Sindoor Daan Ceremony?

While unmarried girls are permitted to witness most wedding rituals, they are not allowed to observe the Sindoor Daan. To maintain the sanctity of the ritual, a cloth partition is created around the bride and groom during this moment, where the groom fills the bride’s hair parting with sindoor, typically three, five, or seven times. The use of a ring or coin is often employed to perform this ritual.

This tradition is especially followed in regions like Bihar, where unmarried girls are strictly prohibited from witnessing the Sindoor Daan. According to local beliefs, if an unmarried girl observes this ritual, the auspicious benefits of the sindoordaan may not be fully realised.

Sindoor – A Symbol Of Eternal Prosperity:

According to experts, sindoor is considered a symbol of eternal prosperity in Hinduism. In the human body, there are seven chakras, with the energy of the head area being most significant. According to astrology, the Sun and the Mars planets have an influence on the area where the sindoor is applied, i.e., the forehead and hairline. Therefore, applying sindoor strengthens both the Sun and Mars, bringing blessings for a prosperous and harmonious marital life.
