While there are a total of 12 Purnima (full moon) dates in the Hindu calendar, the full moon of the Sawan month holds special significance. The Purnima Tithi will begin on 8 August at 2:12 PM and will end on 9 August at 1:24 PM. Based on the rising moon and the sunrise calendar, all rituals including bathing, fasting, and worship will be conducted on 9 August.

In Vedic astrology, there are 27 lunar constellations (nakshatras), all associated with the Moon. Among them is the Shravan Nakshatra, which is believed to be active during Sawan Purnima. Hence, this full moon is also referred to as Shravani Purnima. Worshipping the moon during moonrise on this day is considered highly beneficial. Devotees offer Arghya (water offering) to the Moon after it rises, marking the completion of the Purnima fast.
