When Is Devshayani Ekadashi In 2025? Know The Exact Date, Auspicious Yogas, And More

Lord Vishnu’s divine slumber begins with Devshayani Ekadashi, marking the start of the four-month holy period of Chaturmas when all auspicious ceremonies come to a pause.

According to the Hindu calendar, Devshayani Ekadashi is observed on the eleventh day (Ekadashi) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadha. As per Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishnu enters a state of yogic slumber on this day for four months, a period known as Chaturmas. This divine sleep concludes on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month, known as Devutthana Ekadashi.

During this four-month period, all auspicious activities such as marriages, thread ceremonies (Upanayana), housewarmings, and other sacred rituals are suspended. It is believed that Lord Vishnu hands over the responsibility of the cosmos to Lord Shiva before going into rest, which is why worshipping Shiva during Chaturmas is considered highly beneficial. The holy month of Sawan, dedicated to Lord Shiva, also falls within this period.

When Is Devshayani Ekadashi In 2025?

In 2025, Devshayani Ekadashi will be observed on Sunday, July 6. The Ekadashi tithi begins on July 5 at 6:58 PM and ends on July 6 at 9:14 PM. As per Udaya Tithi (sunrise-based calculation), the fast will be kept on July 6, marking the beginning of Chaturmas, which will continue until November 1, 2025.

Scientific Perspective On Chaturmas

According to medical science, during Chaturmas, the sunlight and moonlight reaching the Earth decreases, humidity increases, and waterborne organisms proliferate, leading to a rise in illnesses. Hence, sages and saints traditionally stay at one place during this period, engaging in meditation, scriptural studies, and spiritual discourses.

Auspicious Yogas On Devshayani Ekadashi

This year, Devshayani Ekadashi coincides with Sadhya Yoga until 9:27 PM, followed by Shubh Yoga. Additionally, Tripushkar Yoga and Ravi Yoga also occur, making this a highly auspicious day for worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Narayan for success in all endeavors.

Lord Shiva Takes Over The Cosmic Duties

As per religious beliefs, with Lord Vishnu in rest, the cosmic functions are managed by Lord Shiva. While major religious ceremonies continue, auspicious life events like weddings are put on hold. Devotees are encouraged to devote these months to prayer, worship, and spiritual growth.

Major Festivals During Chaturmas

The first month of Chaturmas is Sawan, dedicated to Lord Shiva, followed by Ganesh Chaturthi and Anant Chaturdashi, which mark significant celebrations of Lord Ganesha. Krishna Janmashtami, celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, is also observed during this period.

No Wedding Bells For Four Months

Chaturmas holds great significance in Hindu tradition. It spans from Devshayani Ekadashi on July 6 to Devutthana Ekadashi on November 1 in 2025. During this time, Lord Vishnu rests in the cosmic ocean (Kshirsagar), resuming universal operations only after Devutthana Ekadashi.

Importance Of Worship During Chaturmas

Devotees are advised to worship both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva during Chaturmas. Performing abhishekam (ritual bathing) of the deities, offering tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu and bilva leaves to Lord Shiva, chanting mantras like Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya and Om Namah Shivaya, listening to Bhagavata Purana discourses, and donating food and money to the needy are considered spiritually rewarding.
