Krishna's Sudarshan Chakra — From Hindu Mythtology To Russian Arm Development Firm

Lord Krishna’s Sudarshan Chakra, a divine disc of cosmic power, symbolises the triumph of righteousness and continues to inspire as a protector of India’s borders.

Lord Krishna's Sudarshan Chakra, a spinning disc of celestial power, stands as one of the most iconic symbols in Hindu mythology. Wielded by Lord Krishna, this legendary weapon has fascinated devotees and scholars alike through the centuries and is still protecting "India that is Bharat".

Sudarshan Chakra: A Weapon Beyond Mortal Reach

Unlike ordinary weapons, the Sudarshan Chakra was no mere tool of war. Ancient texts describe it as a divine weapon, not bestowed upon Krishna by any mortal or deity, but rather an extension of his own cosmic being. Crafted by Vishwakarma, the celestial architect, from the excess radiance of the Sun (or 'sun dust'), this disc was designed for only the highest of gods.

Its name — "Sudarshan" — combines "su" (auspicious) and "darshan" (vision), indicating its role as a protector of the good or auspicious. Lord Surya, or the Sun god, was unable to be with his consort Sanjana, who was the daughter of Vishwakarma. Thus, the Sudarshan Chakra began its journey by enabling love.

Sudarshan Chakra: Vanquisher Of Evil

In Hindu texts, the Sudarshan Chakra has been portrayed as a tool for justice throughout Lord Krishna's presence on Earth. Whether defending devotees from harm or vanquishing evil, Krishna's mastery of the Chakra underscored his role as a divine protector. The disc, adorned with countless sharp spikes and spinning in perpetual motion, could be launched with a mere flick of Krishna's finger.

The Sudarshan Chakra was an undefeatable weapon, and its symbolism is spread throughout the Mahabharat. Krishna refused to use the Sudarshan Chakra in the war. He preferred to keep the Sudarshan Chakra away from the war and let 'Dharma', or righteousness, take its course.

The Sudarshan Chakra was used by Lord Krishna when his cousin, Shishupal, committed his 101st sin by insulting the Lord. Why Krishna waited till that moment is a story for another day, but the symbolism it portrayed was the victory of qualities over vices like ego and vanity.

Sudarshan Chakra: A Tool For Preservation And Peace

However, the Sudarshan Chakra was not a tool to be used only against enemies and in times of war.

The Sudarshan Chakra was also used by Lord Vishnu to save the world from destruction during Lord Shiva's tandav dance. The Sudarshan Chakra was used to cut Sati's body into 51 pieces to free Lord Shiva from the pain of separation from his beloved and bring him peace. The places where the pieces of Sati's body fell are known as Shaktipeeth today.

'Sudarshan Chakra' Of Kalyug

The Dwapar Yug image of Krishna with the Sudarshan Chakra remains a powerful reminder of the victory of dharma (righteousness) over adharma (unrighteousness). The weapon, albeit in another form, is now protecting India's borders in Kalyug.

Developed by Almaz Antey, the Russian-made S-400 missile protection system, which foiled Pakistan's bid to destroy Indian military installations in 15 cities across Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, has been named the Sudarshan Chakra.
