Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025: The grand Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha, is set to begin on June 27, 2025, as Lord Jagannath embarks on his journey to the Gundicha Temple. It is believed that those who participate in this holy procession are freed from all troubles. Spanning nine days, the Rath Yatra includes numerous rituals, one of the most significant being the ceremonial ‘Chera Pahara’.

'Chera Pahara': The Ancient Tradition Of Rath Yatra

This ancient ritual signifies the official commencement of the Rath Yatra. As per tradition, the Gajapati King of Puri — regarded as the foremost servant of Lord Jagannath, who performs the ceremonial sweeping in front of the chariots using a golden broom. He also sprinkles sandalwood-scented water along the path of the deities.

The symbolic act of cleansing the path is done to purify the way for the Lord's journey. Only after this ritual are the massive chariots pulled by thousands of devotees. It represents the profound message that in the eyes of the divine, there is no distinction between a king and a commoner.

Devotees believe that sweeping with a golden broom is an expression of utmost devotion and humility. It symbolises their desire to offer the best of themselves to the deity.

Symbolism Of Golden Broom

Gold, traditionally associated with prosperity and good fortune, adds a deeper significance to this ritual. The ceremony not only reflects the spiritual essence of the Rath Yatra but also highlights its royal grandeur and historical heritage.

According to the Skanda Purana, a person who sweeps the path of Lord Jagannath’s chariot attains salvation. It is said to eliminate negativity from one’s life while inviting happiness and prosperity.
