What Is Hartalika Teej?

The term 'Hartalika' comes from two words: Harat (to abduct) and Alika (a female friend). The festival traces its origin to a powerful mythological tale—Goddess Parvati performed intense penance to marry Lord Shiva. When her father, King Himavan, attempted to marry her off to another, her friends secretly took her to the forest so she could continue her penance and fulfill her wish to marry Shiva. This act of devotion and sisterhood is commemorated through the observance of Hartalika Teej each year.
