Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Timing And Significance

In Hindu tradition, Sankashti Chaturthi is observed every month on the fourth day of the waning moon, dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The Ashadha month’s Sankashti Chaturthi holds particular spiritual importance, believed to dispel difficulties and grant peace.

According to Drik Panchang, Chaturthi Tithi begins at 3:46 PM on June 14 and ends at 3:51 PM on June 15.

Astrologers have explained that observing Sankashti Chaturthi helps resolve various life problems. This year’s observance is even more auspicious with the coincidence of Uttara Ashadha Nakshatra and Brahma Yoga. Devotees are encouraged to recite the Ganesh Sankat Nashan Stotra and Ganesh Chalisa, and offer sacred items like Durva grass, Modak, and Sindoor for divine blessings.

How To Perform The Puja

Pandit Vinay Tripathi outlines the traditional method of Sankashti Chaturthi Puja:

  • Begin by bathing the idol of Ganesha with Panchamrit or Ganga water.
  • Apply ghee and sindoor to the deity’s body.
  • Offer items like roli, mauli, akshat, perfume, janeu, abir-bukka, betel leaves, supari, cloves, and cardamom.
  • Present garlands of marigold or hibiscus, along with 3, 11, or 21 blades of durva grass.
  • Light a ghee lamp and offer modak, bananas, and halwa as bhog.
  • Recite Sankat Nashan Stotra and other Ganesha mantras during the prayer.

Important Mantras To Chant

As mentioned in the Narada Purana, devotees should recite the powerful Sankashta Mantra:

“Pranamya Shirasa Devam Gauriputram Vinayakam
Bhaktavāsaṃ smaren nityam āyuḥ kāmārtha siddhaye...”

This verse continues with the 12 names of Lord Ganesha, including Vakratunda, Ekadanta, Lambodara, and Gajanan. Reciting these names at all three sandhyas (dawn, noon, and dusk) is believed to eliminate all obstacles and grant success in all endeavours.

Additionally, continuous chanting of “Ganapate Namah” during the puja amplifies its spiritual benefits.

This sacred occasion is a divine opportunity for devotees to seek the grace of Lord Ganesha, ensuring peace, prosperity, and a life free of hurdles.
