The festival starts on the fourth day which is also known as Chaturthi of the waxing moon in the Kartik month and continues until the Saptami, the seventh day. This four-day festival is very important for everyone. It begins with 'Nahay Khaye' which is the ritual bathing and eating. During Chhath Puja, both the Sun God and his sister Chhathi Maiya are worshipped.

There are several beliefs associated with Chhath Puja, making the fast even more special. The fast observed during Chhath Puja is considered one of the toughest. This fast is kept for the well-being, long life, good health, and prosperity of children, requiring a strict 36-hour waterless observance. Women primarily observe this fast, and there are strict rules they must follow.

Keep These Things In Mind During Chhath Puja

  • Women observing the fast should not eat anything without offering Arghya or water to the Sun God. On the first and second days, eat only after offering water to the Sun, and sleep on the ground.
  • Do not use silver, steel, or plastic utensils in the puja. Only use clay stoves and utensils for this worship.
  • Ensure that the prasad is not contaminated while being prepared. Do not eat anything before preparing the prasad.
  • Maintain cleanliness during the puja. Wear clean clothes during the 36-hour fast and ensure that puja items are handled with clean hands.
  • Completely avoid eating non-vegetarian food, garlic, and onions during the Chhath Puja.
  • Do not eat at the place where the prasad is being prepared.
  • Those observing the fast should control their speech and avoid using foul language. Otherwise, the benefits of the puja may not be attained.
