What Is Chaturmas?

The word Chaturmas comes from Sanskrit, Chatur means "four" and Mas means "months." It refers to the four lunar months of Shravan, Bhadrapad, Ashwin, and Kartik. According to Hindu beliefs, during this period, Lord Vishnu enters a state of deep meditation or Yoganidra  in the cosmic ocean and awakens only on Devuthani Ekadashi, marking the end of Chaturmas.

Why Is Chaturmas Spiritually Important?

During Chaturmas, auspicious ceremonies like weddings are generally avoided, though exceptions exist for events like Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri, when certain rituals are permitted. However, this time is considered extremely favourable for prayers, havans, and reading of sacred texts. Even Jain monks observe Chaturmas by staying in one place for intense spiritual practice.

How Should One Live During Chaturmas?

Chaturmas affects not only spiritual life but also daily lifestyle choices. It’s believed that digestion weakens during this season and food and water become more susceptible to contamination. Hence, fasting and light, sattvic diets are encouraged. Many people consume only fruits or simple dishes like sabudana khichdi to support both body and soul.

Rituals To Follow During Chaturmas

  • To observe Chaturmas with sincerity and discipline, follow these traditional guidelines:
  • Wake up before sunrise, take a bath daily, and try to remain in silence as much as possible.
  • Sleep on the floor to maintain humility and simplicity.
  • Avoid certain foods, such as: In Shravan: leafy vegetables ,In Bhadrapad: curd, In Ashwin: milk, In Kartik: garlic, onion, and urad dal.
  • Refrain from consuming meat, alcohol, sweets, fried snacks, dairy, betel nuts, and oily foods during this period.
  • Chaturmas is not just a seasonal observance, it’s a spiritual journey of inner cleansing, reflection, and reconnection with divinity. By embracing simplicity and devotion, one can experience lasting peace and balance during these four sacred months.
