Fever is usually the first symptom of malaria infection. It may be mild to begin with and progress to high-grade fever as the infection progresses and it may remain till infection is treated. The infected person may experience a paroxysm of fever, shaking chills, and sweats (every 48 or 72 hours, depending on malarial species). The classic paroxysm begins with a period of shivering and chills, which lasts for approximately 1-2 hours and is followed by a high fever. Infants, young children, pregnant women and elderly people are more susceptible to infection. If not treated on time it can lead to cerebral malaria, organ failure and severe anemia.
