Children Suffer Traumatic Injuries After School Bus Crashes In Australia, Driver Held

A group of primary school children suffered traumatic injuries following a horrific bus crash in Melbourne in Australia on Tuesday. According to the police, the bus was carrying 45 children when it was hit by a truck from behind, as reported by BBC. The incident, which took place at the intersection of Exford Road and Murphys Road in Eynesbury in Melbourne, has caused severe injuries to at least nine children. According to The Guardian, one of the children has undergone a complete arm amputation. 

The truck driver is set to be charged for the incident. According to MajorCollision Investigation unit detective senior sergeant, Paul Lineham, the 49-year-old truck driver was taken in custody after the crash and will be interviewed on Wednesday morning, The Guardian reported. “He’s in the process of being interviewed, we would anticipate that he will be charged today with several counts of dangerous driving cause serious injury,” he told 3AW radio.

The police said that the collision occurred on the western fringes of Melbourne when the bus had only just left Exford Primary School. To treat the children, Surgeons worked into the early hours of the morning, Royal Children's Hospital CEO Bernadette McDonald told the media on Wednesday, as reported by BBC.

Some children sustained crushed limbs which forced amputations as well as head injuries, spinal injuries, and serious cuts. Seven children remain at the hospital in serious condition. One of them is in intensive care. "We have some very traumatised families and children in our hospital at the moment," McDonald said, as quoted by BBC. Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are investigating the incident.
