Upcoming Fourth-Gen BMW X5 Teased

The current, third-gen, BMW X5 has been on sale in India since 2014 and within just five years, it's set to undergo a complete generation change. The German carmaker has just teased a camouflaged fourth-gen X5 being put through its paces in a desert, giving us a glimpse of the new model which will be completely revealed later in 2018.

The new BMW X5 is going to replace the existing F15 version by the end of this year and should most likely arrive in India by mid 2019. It is based on the CLAR modular platform which underpins not only the BMW 5 Series, but the recently launched X3, next-gen 3 Series and the upcoming X6 as well. Built on the new chassis, the next-gen X5 should be lighter and hence more fuel efficient than the outgoing third-gen model. BMW has also revealed that the new X5 will feature a new adaptive M suspension setup and integral active steering, which is being offered for the first time on the X5.

BMW says that the X5 prototype is being tested in different climates across various continents. These include its winter test centers in Arjeplog, Sweden, South African gravel trails, desert dunes of the United States, group test grounds at Miramas in the south of France, the high-speed Talladega racing circuit in Alabama, USA and at the Nurburgring in Germany. We really cannot wait to get our hands on it to find out how polished the new X5’s driving dynamics and ride quality will be. Also Read: BMW X2 Unveiled; India Launch On The Cards

BMW is expected to let the engine options remain unchanged, be it the global market or India. And hence it is likely to carry forward the current 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine which churns out nearly 260PS of power and 560Nm of torque, while delivering a claimed fuel efficiency of 15.97kmpl. It’s available in two variants: Design Pure Experience and M Sport, priced at Rs 76.9 lakh and Rs 82.6 lakh (both prices ex-showroom), respectively.
