The Tata 45X-based hatchback will hit the market in the second half of 2019

Tata has begun extensively testing its upcoming premium hatchback based on the 45X concept. The 45X made its world debut at the 2018 Indian Auto Show in February and was also showcased at the Geneva Motor Show the following month. Before the Expo, the Tata hatchback was spotted for the first time in October 2017, but it had a comparatively deceiving camo. It will be the first Tata to be underpinned by the new modular ALFA-ARC (Agile Light Flexible Advanced Architecture) platform.

While the 45X concept is over four metres in length, the production-spec model should, of course, be a sub-4m offering like its rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and the upcoming MQB A0 IN-based sixth-gen VW Polo. The 45X, for instance, has a length of 4,253mm and at 2630mm, and its wheelbase matches that of midsize sedans such as the City and Ciaz. Nevertheless, expect it to be a spacious offering like the Jazz and the Baleno with a boot space of over 300 litres.

The silhouette of the test mule looks similar to the 45X concept, with a swooping roofline and upward sweeping window line. Tata has placed the rear door handle on the C-pillar, as seen on the concept as well, and It makes the side profile look relatively cleaner. The new Swift, for example, also features a similar layout for the rear door handle. The wheel wells look large and the test mules appear to be shod with 16-inch wheels. While these test mules have dummy lamps, the production model might pack LED head- and tail lamps as seen on the concept.

Unlike the concept, the production model should feature a regular analogue instrument cluster with a centre multi-info display. The 45X concept packs a large Mercedes-like floating display that combines both the infotainment system and instrument cluster into a single unit. We expect Tata to offer an improved version of the Nexon’s infotainment system, which isn’t the most responsive units around. It should be a Harman-powered system and might get a larger display than the 6.5-inch unit in the Nexon. The H5X SUV could also borrow the same unit.

Being a sub-4m offering, the 45X-based hatchback will presumably share its powertrain options with the Nexon. The Nexon is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol (110PS/170Nm) and a 1.5-litre diesel (110PS/260Nm), both mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and featuring an optional 6-speed AMT (automated-manual transmission). At the time of Nexon’s launch, Tata had confirmed that both of these engines are BSVI-ready.
