Infant found from room with mother's body hanging since 2 days

New Delhi: A one-and-half-month-old baby was rescued from a house two days after his mother allegedly hung herself from a ceiling fan, in north Delhi's Subzi Mandi area, police said today. 23-year-old Deepa's body was found hanging from the fan while the infant was found lying on the floor weeping, a senior police official said. Deepa's elder sister had been calling her since Wednesday but did not get any response. Worried, she reached Deepa's house last evening and found that the door was bolted from inside and a foul smell emanating from the place, the official said. She informed police, who broke open the door and found the body hanging while the infant was found lying on the floor, he added. The child has been admitted to a hospital where he was recuperating, police said. The body had started decomposing and it seemed that she had committed suicide around August 30, said the officer, adding that it had been sent for postmortem to ascertain the time of her death. Deepa was living separately from her husband Mukul for the last three to four months. She had been married for a year but cracks started appearing in her marriage soon after, said the officer. She had filed a case of dowry harassment against her husband, police said. Deepa's family is saying that she was depressed over her marriage, said the officer, adding that since no suicide note was found, it is difficult to say what prompted her to take the extreme step.
