Bengal CM Mamata Backs PM Modi-Led Centre On Bangladesh Violence, ISKCON Issues
While speaking about the arrest of ISKCON priest's arrest in Bangladesh, CM Mamata Banerjee said that the state accepted the centre's decision.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the government didn’t want any religion to be harmed. She said since the matter also concerned another country, “the Central government should take relevant action on this”. The chief minister said that West Bengal's government's complete solidarity with the Centre over the issue. She expressed concern over the safety of religious minorities in the neighbouring country.
She also said she had spoken to the chief of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Kolkata regarding the situation.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee while speaking on Bangladesh violence was quoted by ANI as saying, "We do not want any religion to be harmed. I have spoken to ISKCON here. Since this is a matter of another country, the Central government should take relevant action on this. We are with them [Central government] on this issue".
This is not the first time that the Chief Minister has claimed that her government will accept any decision taken by the PM Modi-led Central government on external affairs issues. She said the same thing when the current crisis broke out in Bangladesh a few months back.
Similarly, Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay expressed TMC's support to the Government of India over the Bangladesh situation.
"TMC doesn't give any statement on any international issue or that relating to the Ministry of External Affairs. We will support the stand of the Government of India," he was quoted by ANI.
India noted with "deep concern" regarding the arrest of Das and he urged authorities in the neighbouring country to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all other minority groups.
This comes after ISKCON priest Chinmoy Das was taken into custody by Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Monday. Das was taken into custody by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 4:30 pm.
Das was arrested on sedition charges and sent to prison after a Bangladeshi court denied him bail. This triggered massive protests by Hindus in various locations, including the capital Dhaka and the port city of Chittagong. Later, ISKCON Bangladesh also issued a list of demands to the government for subsequent violence and attacks against Sanatanis in various regions of Bangladesh.
On Wednesday night, the ISKCON Kolkata vice-president and spokesperson Radharaman Das informed that the ISKCON Namhatta centre in Shibchar Bangladesh was forcefully closed down. On the same day, Chief Priest of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple Acharya Satyendra Das also condemned the petition in Bangladesh seeking a ban on ISKCON.
