Uttarakhand CM Tirath Singh Rawat Sends Resignation To JP Nadda Months After Taking Oath

As per reports, Rawat has sent his resignation to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president JP Nadda.

New Delhi: In an unprecedented development, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat has send his resignation from the top post in less than six months after taking oath, sources have told ABP News.

As per reports, Rawat has sent his resignation to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president JP Nadda.

Rawat, in his letter to BJP chief, has referred to People Representation Act 191 and said that he could not be re-elected to lead Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly in the next six month.

According to the Constitution, Rawat, an MP from Pauri Garhwal who was sworn in as CM on March 10, needs to become a member of the state assembly before September 10 to continue in office.

Rawant, in his letter to BJP chief, underlined that he might not be able to become an MLA in the coming two months and that his why he has sought to resign.

The development comes amid speculation over a change of leadership in Uttarakhand and BJP could pick a new leader as CM, given the possibility that the Election Commission may not hold a bypoll enabling Rawat's election to the state assembly.

Earlier in the day, Singh Rawat had indicated that the BJP will take a call depending on the Election Commission's decision on holding a bypoll in the state.

According to Assembly rules, Singh needs to be elected as an MLA in the next two months to continue as Uttarakhand CM, which he overtook after the BJP leadership removed Trivendra Singh Rawat from the helm.

Uttarakhand Assembly term is scheduled to end in less than a year and thus, experts believe, EC might not order a bypoll for the vacant seats in the state.

Meanwhile, speculation over a change of guard in the state became more prominent after Rawat summoned to Delhi, where he meet the BJP's top leaders including party president J P Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
