Triple-talaq row: 'My husband sent me a divorce on WhatsApp'
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Dussehra address, spoke about women rights. He also raised the concern for that they must get equal rights. It is being comprehended that PM was hinting at the ‘triple talaq’ issue, which has been creating a lot of buzz among Muslims.
What is Triple talaq?
According to Muslim tradition, a marriage could be called off by saying, ‘talaq’ thrice. This custom has been going on for years now. A debate has been for many years if the custom should prevail or should it be dismissed.
ABP News spoke to 3 different Muslim women, who were left by their husbands, by after misusing triple talaq custom. Here’s what they had to say:
- The first Story being Bushra’s, who was kicked out from the house by her husband, along with her 2 kids, after saying triple talaq thrice; that too when she was in half conscious state. According to Bushra, her husband told her that “she was of no use to him and must leave the house”
- The second story is of Tasneem Khan from Uttar Pradesh. Tasneem was divorced by her husband, Fareed on WhatsApp. The woman is now left with two young kids, and no one to financially support them
- The third story of Mumtaz, whose husband threw her out of his life over a telephonic conversation after two years of marriage and declared a talaq. According to Mumtaz, her husband didn’t even listen to what she had to say, just said Talaq thrice and hung up on her
On October 8, Modi government declared triple talaq as against the constitution. The government said, “Triple talaq has no place in the constitution. As per the constitution, the men don’t have the right to marry more than once".
Opposition on the other hand suggested that the matter is hot and must be brought to calm after taking everyone’s suggestions.
